Located in the Eastern tip of Java island, Mount Ijen is deservedly famous for its incredible natural beauty, but also for the sulfur mine that lies next to its turquoise crater lake. Local porters are hired by the mining company to carry huge loads of sulfur (up to 90 kg) from the mine to the base of the mountain. This extreme job is both strenuous and harmful, since the sulfur fumes can cause respiratory diseases and even death.
